Optical Engineering

Optical Engineering is a discipline that focuses on fundamentals, technologies and applications of optics and photonics. The discipline of Optical Engineering at Soochow University (OESU) is a prestigious program of long history in the University and also in China since 1920s. Over the years, OESU has maintained a tradition of high quality research, high quality talent training and a strong partnership with industry and incubating startup high-tech companies. High quality graduate programs leading to M.S. and Ph.D. degrees and also postdoctoral training in Optics and Photonics are offered at OESU. Because of its academic and technological achievements, OESU has long been categorized as ‘Class I Provincial Key Discipline’, and belongs to the cluster of the priority academic programs of the Province.

 

Missions and Orientations

- To create and disseminate knowledge and innovations in optics and photonics by conducting cutting-edge fundamental and applied research to address some of the most demanding challenges in the fields of new energy, new materials, information, electronics and other important optics-related fields.

- To provide the highest quality education in optical science and engineering, and serve the continuing educational needs of industry.

- To contribute to the development of the regional and national knowledge-based and technology-based industries, and create, foster, and sustain mutually beneficial research collaborations and partnerships with industry.

   With those together, OESU ultimately becomes a renowned and top-ranked discipline with distinctive features both nationally and internationally.

 

Superiorities and Features

As a result of years of research efforts, the OESU has developed two remarkable features. (1) It has made a global impact in the area of nano-manufacturing, especially in the area of ‘interference lithography’, ‘laser direct writing lithography’, ‘high throughput nanoimprinting technology’, and ‘sub-wavelength optical technology’, and has led to the creation of the most advanced optical nano-manufacturing center in China. (2) As a result of pioneering work led by Academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering (Prof. Minqiu Xue and Prof. Junhua Pan, full professors at OESU), OESU has acquired a high reputation in advanced optical design, manufacturing and testing technologies, and is one of the most famous center for optical system design, manufacturing and testing.

 

-     Faculty: OESU currently has 66 academic faculty members, which include 1 Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, 1 winner of National Research Fund of Outstanding Youth, 4 winners of National Research Fund of Excellent Youth, and 5 winners of Thousand Talent Program for Young Outstanding Scientists, and 26 distinguished full professors, including 3 full-time foreign experts (Prof. Joel MoserProf. Mark Rummeli and Prof. Bo Hou). OESU also hosts 4 innovation teams and excellence of teaching teams awarded by Ministry of Defense of China, Ministry of Education of China and Jiangsu Province, respectively. 


   -  Key Laboratories Platform and Facilities: OESU is home to several internationally renowned research centers dedicated to Optical Engineering, such as “National and Provincial Joint Engineering Research Center for Digital Laser Imaging and Display”, “Key Lab of Modern Optical Technologies of Education Ministry of 

-     China”, “Key Lab of Modern Optical Technologies of Jiangsu Province”, “Key Lab of Advanced Optical Manufacturing Technologies of Jiangsu Province”, and “Digital Laser Imaging and Display Engineering Research Center of Ministry of Education of China”. These centers are equipped with state-of-the-art instruments whose value exceeds 130 million RMB. Laboratories extend over a surface area of 16,000 m2, including a 5000 m2 cleanroom of class 1000. In addition, some of the unique (largest) optical manufacturing equipment nationwide can be found at OESU, including the largest holographic platform (8m x 10m), the largest holographic exposure device, and equipment capable of fabricating the meter-scale size diffraction gratings. OESU also hosts the nationwide leading optical design, manufacturing, and testing platform.

-     Researches and achievements: Over the past four years, more than 200 research programs in Optical Engineering are conducted by our faculty members, with more than 200 million RMB funding are support. Research in OESU has led to the publication of more than 400 peer-reviewed papers, including more than 100 papers published in top ranked journals (such as Nature Photonics, Nature Communications, Advanced Materials, Optics Letters, etc.). The faculty produced more than 100 patents in this discipline during the past 5 years, 2 of these were recognized by the Government of Jiangsu Province as major technological breakthroughs, and 3 patents were awarded National prizes for progress in science and technology in 2010, 2012, and 2015, respectively. The productive value of the patented technologies transferred from OESU exceeds 1 billion RMB.

-     Engineering Capabilities and Awards: Largest holographic optical manufacturing platform (8m x 10m) in China is housed at OESU, and the largest pulse compressed grating in China has been realized at OESU whose performances equal those developed by USA and France National Laboratories; OESU has led to the creation of a high throughput laser direct writing system for nano-patterning on large surface areas, a technology that was awarded the 2nd National Prize for Science and Technology Progress (2011); OESU has led to the creation of the first roll-to-roll UV nano-imprinting system in China with a web-width of up to 1.4m (1st Prize for Progress in Science and Technology of Jiangsu Province, 2011); Advanced capabilities of design, fabrication, and test of optical components on meter scales, and capabilities of the design and systematic integration of the space remote camera that is onboard a Chinese satellite currently orbiting the Earth.

    -  Academic Exchanges and Collaborations: OESU has extensive links and collaborations with other universities and institutions throughout the world including USA, UK, Canada, Finland and Hong Kong etc. Through our extensive network of international partnerships, we offer opportunities for collaboration on many levels, including supporting governments and companies in the development of their interested topics and providing international studying experiences for students and young staff. OESU also provides program of short to middle-term research-based non-degree training, as well as program toward M. Sc and Ph. D degree.

Cultivation and training goals

OESU offers full range of undergraduate and graduate programs leading to B.Sc., M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees, and also postdoctoral research program in Optics and Photonics, providing students with lessons and trainings suitable for employment in academy, research institute and industry for various innovative researches and engineering activities, including information technology, optoelectronics, engineering optics, optical communications and image processing.

 

Discipline and research directions

Optical Engineering has been actively studied by faculty and students engaged in research covering a wide spectrum of optics and photonics. Currently, the research interests and focuses at OESU include physics and design of photonics devices, nanophotonics fabrication technologies, integrated optical design and fabrication technologies, and novel energy and displays photonics. 

Domestic and international influence

Optical Engineering at Soochow University is nationally and internationally recognized for its distinguished optical and nanophotonic manufacturing laboratories and centers. Many innovative technologies have been invented at OESU, such as ultra-thin light waveguides, 3D imaging and display, 3D light field printing, ultra-large (55-inch) transparent conductive films. These new technologies have made a considerable impact on optoelectronic display manufacturing industry and on our society. For example, the 3D light field printer is now routinely used by the Ministry of Public Security of China to make vehicle license plates fraud-proof. Ultra-thin light waveguides are one of the key components in “Surface Pro4” by Microsoft. “Visionboard”, a product integrated into large transparent conductive film, is comparable to “Surface hub” by Microsoft, and is known as all-in-one intelligent “touch screen” for meetings and television. The benefit realized from such technology transfer of OESU has exceeded 1 billion RMB over the past 5 years. The research capabilities and achievements and also the successful model of technology transfer at OESU were reported on a recent “CCTV news” program, broadcast on April 16, 2014. Furthermore, in 2014 Zhanyuan Du, the Vice Minister of Education of China, and Jianlin Cao, the Vice Minister of Technology of China, visited the nanophotonic manufacturing center at OESU. In 2015, Vice Prime Minister Yandong Liu was shown the large-size transparent conductive sensor as well as the large smart table developed at OESU. The Vice Prime Minister expressed her appreciation for the creativity demonstrated at Soochow, and for research achievements and also the rapid industrialization of technologies developed in nanophotonics at OESU. In June of 2016, the innovated “touch screen” from OESU was shown at 12th Five-Year Science and Technology Innovation Achievement Exhibition of China.
