A new class of planar, wavelength-thick optical components exhibiting exceptional optical properties have merged in recent years. These artificial interfaces, known as metasurfaces, rely on the scattering properties of the subwavelength structures patterned at interfaces to manipulate the wavefront of light in almost any desired manner . To further develop this technology towards dynamic tuning, broadband applications and industrial production, new materials and new fabrication methods are required [2,3]. In this presentation, I will introduce basic design and fabrication methods of semiconductor-based metasurfaces and demonstrate exciting new monolithic integration of metasurfaces onto VCSELs under back emitting configuration [4,5]. Our wafer-level nonintrusive approach addresses the issues of arbitrary shaping laser beams with programmable controllability for various laser beam shaping applications
Patrice Genevet is a CNRS researcher, affiliated to the center or research on hetero-epitaxy and applications, located at Sophia-Antipolis in France. Dr. Genevet obtained a PhD from the University Côte d'Azur in 2009. He joined the Capasso group at Harvard University in collaboration with Prof. Marlan O. Scully to work on plasmonics and metamaterials. He worked for 5 years as research associate at Harvard University to develop of the concept of metasurfaces and planar optics. In 2014 he was appointed as a senior research scientist in A*STAR, Singapore. In 2015, he received the ERC stg and joined the CNRS to work on semiconductor-based metasurfaces. He is the recipient of the 2017 “Aimé COTTON” prize, awarded annually to a young physicist working in the field of atomic and molecular physics by the Council of the French Physics Society and the 2019 ERC Proof of Concept. He published more than 70 papers, including several Science, Nature family journals, and Physical Review Letters. He co-authored 5 chapters, holds three US patents.
